When temperatures heat up, Milwaukeeans know exactly where to head. But all Wisconsinites should put Bradford Beach on their summer must-visit lists.
With Lake Michigan to the east and downtown Milwaukee to the west, this large stretch of sand is ideal for a beach day. Bring your towels, sand toys and snacks, and settle in for some fun in the sun!
You’re likely to have company, as Bradford is one of the city’s largest and most popular public beaches — in 2016, it ranked as the third best urban beach in the country by USA Today readers. Dozens of volleyball nets, a concessions stand and tiki huts, cabana rentals, special events and live music on the weekends create a party vibe in the heat of the summer.
But come early in the day, or early (or late) in the season, and the beach is extra family-friendly. Wade in the water, build sandcastles and take in the juxtaposition of the ocean-like lake set alongside trees, bluffs and a bustling city.
And when you’ve had enough surf and sand, take a stroll on the paved Oak Leaf Trail, which runs right between the beach and Lincoln Memorial Drive. And don’t leave without cooling down with some frozen custard at the stand set just south of the beach and its parking lot.
