Dear 2019,
The new year has begun, and it’s time to make a few changes.
As you know, up until this point I have loyally, dutifully, oftentimes enthusiastically taken on more responsibilities than any one person could reasonably handle. I’ve volunteered to worry about everyone else, signed up for tasks that are better suited for others and imposed the expectation of doing everything flawlessly.
I’m ready to admit now that this situation isn’t working, that these goals — which up to this point seemed so crucial — are neither achievable nor necessary.
Therefore, I am giving official notice that in 2019 I will no longer:
• Expect to be able to do everything.
• Worry about things that won’t matter later.
• Say yes to things that I don’t need or want.
• Prioritize “urgent” and “important” things if they really aren’t.
• Ignore my need to take a break or let something go.
However, in the new year, I will:
• Say yes to the things that matter to me and my family.
• Tune out others’ expectations.
• Protect my time fiercely.
• Delegate!
• Remember that work will always be there and that it can usually wait.
• Help others in ways I can.
• Be grateful.
I look forward to a renewed focus in the months ahead, and I hope you understand my need for change. But if you don’t, I’m cool with that, too.
Sincerely,
Katie
